Vesico-Ureteral reflux leads to Urine Infections in kids

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Nowadays, several children’s and infants suffer from urine infection. The urinary tract plays a crucial role in the waste disposal system of the body. But, the children get inflicted with UTI due to Vesicoureteral reflux. This activity obstructs the flow of urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder which leads to infectivity of the urine.

During normal secretion, the urinary bladder contracts and passes the urine into the urethra from where it is thrown out of the body. But, during Vesicoureteral reflux the urine flows back to the kidneys through the ureters. This phenomenon is predominant among children below 6 being of age. Under severe cases, it can lead to blockage of kidneys.

This shape up gives birth to bacterial syndromes leading to urine infections. At times, it can also lead to renal scarring that hampers the growth of the child. A minor scar on one of the kidneys can lead to high blood pressure throughout the life. Sometimes, renal scarring on both the sides of the kidneys can lead to complete renal failure. Hence, you’ll need to undergo a kidney transplant or dialysis.

Children supposed with Vesicoureteral reflux can be diagnosed through a renal ultrasound or voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG). The state of hurt can be classified into five stages, ranging from stage 1 to stage 5. The stage 1 is the preliminary stage that can be treated through medicines and tests, while stage 4 and 5 are trying to treat.

This shape up can be treated by conducting tests at regular intervals. At the time of diagnosis, they are kept on antibiotic treatment to keep the urine infections at a bay. The children are questioned to undergo an urinalysis or urine culture as soon as symptoms like high fever, urgent and frequent urine, abdominal pain etc occurs.

Hence, children with problem of Vesicoureteral reflux are questioned to monitor their height, weight, blood pressure and urine after regular interval of time. This ensures that the shape up does not aggravate reaching the final stage. Hence, it’s necessary to keep a check on the occurrence of urine infections among children suffering from Vesicoureteral reflux.
